A new mini PC and a used business desktop can cost roughly the same while solving different home-lab problems. The mini PC emphasizes efficiency and density. The desktop emphasizes expansion, repairability, and freedom from adapters.

Short answer: choose a mini PC for quiet, always-on compute when one or two network ports and internal drives are enough. Choose a used small-form-factor desktop for PCIe cards, several drives, inexpensive memory capacity, or easier repairs.

Why mini PCs work

They also make it easier to separate boot, VM, and backup storage. Full towers add more flexibility, but consume more space and may idle higher.

Calculate the complete system

A bargain desktop may need memory, an SSD, network card, fans, and a power adapter. A cheap mini PC may need a better SSD or proprietary accessories. Price the complete usable configuration.

Do not treat processor TDP as wall consumption. Firmware, storage, network cards, and power supplies affect real electricity use. Measure at the wall when operating cost matters.
