Intel N100 vs. Ryzen Mini PCs for Proxmox

N100 systems excel at light services. Ryzen mini PCs offer far more concurrency and memory headroom.

Intel N100 and AMD Ryzen mini PCs appear in the same shopping results but occupy different home-lab tiers. N100 is a four-core efficiency processor. A Ryzen 7 8845HS-class system offers eight cores, sixteen threads, dual-channel memory, and more platform bandwidth at a higher price and power envelope.

Choose N100-class hardware for lightweight containers, network services, or a secondary node. Choose Ryzen for several active VMs, development environments, databases, nested labs, or more than 16 GB of memory.

System manufacturers can impose lower limits. Use the memory capacity validated for the exact mini PC and firmware, not only the processor page.

Where N100 makes sense

N100 is well suited to DNS filtering, reverse proxies, uptime monitoring, VPN endpoints, Home Assistant, and a few Linux containers. Intel Quick Sync can help compatible media workflows. The constraint is concurrency: four threads and one memory channel leave less room when several jobs become busy.

The Beelink EQ14 uses the closely related four-core Intel N150 and is a representative light-service option; it is not the N100 processor used in the comparison table.

Where Ryzen earns its cost

An eight-core, sixteen-thread Ryzen platform is a better general-purpose virtualization host. It supports far more memory at processor level, while additional PCIe connectivity helps storage and I/O. The mini PC manufacturer still decides which lanes reach usable slots and ports.

The Lenovo ThinkCentre M75q Gen 5 configuration linked below uses an eight-core Ryzen 7 PRO 8700GE. It illustrates the higher-capacity Ryzen tier, but it is not the mobile Ryzen 7 8845HS used in the specification table.

GPU passthrough depends on firmware, IOMMU groups, kernel, and device layout. Verify it for the exact system rather than assuming every Ryzen mini PC behaves alike.

TDP is not an electricity bill

The published 6 W and 45 W values describe processor design targets, not complete-system wall use. Only comparable measurements of complete machines settle operating cost.

Our buying rule

  • N100/N150: utility node or focused light service host.
  • Ryzen 7: primary node for mixed VMs and containers where memory expansion matters.
  • Used desktop: consider it first if PCIe expansion matters more than size.

If the workload is light and defined, N100 can be disciplined and efficient. If this is your first general node, Ryzen has the longer growth runway.
